Fill her up with Intel

inel-lithium-ion-car-batteries Intel manufacturing advanced batteries; sounds like the stuff of economic evolution well, it might happen; let's hope it does.

Engaget's Thomas Ricker picked up the story on WSJ. Apparently former Intel chairman Andrew Grove is pushing them to consider a new venture -- becoming a manufacturer of advanced batteries for plug-in electric cars.

Mr. Grove, who retired in 2005 but still advises Intel, is urging the current chief executive, Paul Otellini, to steer the company into battery production as a way to diversify business as well as fill a strategic niche as auto makers shift to production of plug-in electric vehicles.

For me this is great news; we have the designs for a Lithium Ion battery technology with eight times the capacity of current cells; that's nearly 2,000 miles on a charge in the Roadster, but it takes companies like Intel to turn that into a product. I like the idea of charging my car once a month.

An comeback AMD?

It's a really forward-thinking move, and you'd really love to see Tesla joint-venture this with Intel or the like.  Build some value back into Tesla by developing some IP.
