Lutz calls for higher gas prices

Make me pay! The BBC reports at the Detroit Auto Show; On the subject of efficient vehicles like the Volt “Even in a good economy, you're not going to get Americans to buy these cars if petrol remains at $1.50 a gallon," says Bob Lutz of GM.

“If you want to fight national obesity," he says, "you have to increase the price of fatty foods. But the US won't do that so they force the clothing manufacturers to produce only small sizes."

I will bite my tongue on how I really feel 'bout Mr. Lutz.

I will say this though, he should be fired along with the CEO'S of the Big Three..

I have mixed feelings; I can't tell who he is for all the hype. I've seen interviews and thought keep him away! but then he's behind the Volt, talks mass-production and adoption. Don't know.

LOL He has NO choice but, to be behind the Volt. His company's future depends on it!

Lutz championed the Volt long before his company's future depended on it.  The man has been pretty visionary in the industry for a long time.

That said, his Detroit commentary makes him sound like a loon.

Ummm yea he started to get "visionary" right after the movie "Who killed the Electric Car?" came out. Hmmm can't imagine why? LOL

Know your facts.  Lutz is the man behind the Dodge Viper and he Chrysler LH platform.   He also developed the original Ford Explorer (foreseeing the market for SUV's).

Just about anything interesting to come out of GM lately he has had a hand in, not just the Volt.  That includes driver's cars like the Pontiac G8, the Cadillac CTS, and the Saturn Sky.

The man has almost singlehandedly saved GM.  Don't under-estimate his sway in the industry and what he can do for the cause of EV's.  Nor be a cynic.   He was not a part of GM at the time of the EV-1.

So, o.k. in visionary I meant something that does not use gasoline..My Bad!!  & the point was just proved by all the cars you listed. The only one that even resembles  economical is the Sky. So my question is this, if he was so visionary, why is GM in such a mess right now! LOL

LOL Thanx for the tip there. I just want to make sure my comments are not conceived as hateful or attacking. Everyone who meets me always say I am really easy to get along with..

Nope, just spreading knowledge in my naturally abrasive and overbearing manner, so please do challenge me.

If you look at what else is in GM's product line, you'll note that the cars that Lutz has been involved in were well-differentiated.  His evangelism of the Volt preceded much of the doom about $4/gallon gas, but GM only gave him a big voice in the media after the crisis when they felt folks would care.   Remember that GM is a massive company and Lutz, no matter how visionary, is but one man and only as influential as the machine allows him to be.

Do not take this at all to mean that I agree with everything from Lutz' mouth, or even his take on the Volt or where EV's are going.  I just do mean to give respect where it's due, and Lutz has done much.  I know nothing of his history on EV's, but he wouldn't have much sway now if all he'd ever done was evangelize the EV in a petrol-powered world.  And certainly, there's a certain tip of the cap owed to a man who can adapt to change.

All in all, we could probably do with more men like Lutz.  They seem to grasp what the public might want and be able to mesh that with what they actually need.  Can't all be Henrik Fisker and Martin Eberhardt trying to bring cars that inspire passion.  There is room for the practicality and blandness of the Prius and Volt.
