Preston Tucker is most remembered for his 1948 Tucker Torpedo, an automobile which introduced many features that have since become widely used in modern cars. Production of the Torpedo was shut down amidst scandal and accusations of stock fraud on March 3, 1949.
The renown publication of all that is gritty and true; ValleyWag has published an article comparing Elon Musk to Preston Tucker; I can see some connections admittedly but can’t agree with the doom mongering. After all, Tucker’s car pushed technologies such as aerodynamic body styling, disk brakes, fuel injection and even a padded dash for safety! These are features that made their way into every car today. And the fraud charges? All were acquitted.
The difference between Tucker and Musk is that where Tucker produced just 50 cars in total (13 of which where built from parts after the factory closed) there are more than 150 Roadsters on the Road; there are orders on the books and there is a factory producing power trains at a profit.
Tesla may fail, it’s a long way to go yet but I don’t think that it’s in our best interests to look for that but rather to look out for that.
