Who is Preston Tucker and what does he have to do with Tesla Motors?

Preston Tucker Preston Tucker is most remembered for his 1948 Tucker Torpedo, an automobile which introduced many features that have since become widely used in modern cars. Production of the Torpedo was shut down amidst scandal and accusations of stock fraud on March 3, 1949.

The renown publication of all that is gritty and true; ValleyWag has published an article comparing Elon Musk to Preston Tucker; I can see some connections admittedly but can’t agree with the doom mongering. After all, Tucker’s car pushed technologies such as aerodynamic body styling, disk brakes, fuel injection and even a padded dash for safety! These are features that made their way into every car today. And the fraud charges? All were acquitted.

The difference between Tucker and Musk is that where Tucker produced just 50 cars in total (13 of which where built from parts after the factory closed) there are more than 150 Roadsters on the Road; there are orders on the books and there is a factory producing power trains at a profit.

Tesla may fail, it’s a long way to go yet but I don’t think that it’s in our best interests to look for that but rather to look out for that.

Well MPT,

I dont know if Tesla is going to make it or not? Personally I think they will but, thats my opinion. Anyways no matter if they suceed or fail, the electric revolution being started is LARGELY credited to them!!

GO TESLA!!

Its easy to make the comparison, especially during Tesla's infancy.  Personally, I wouldnt put Elon and Tesla in the same bucket as Tucker and DeLorean.

Speaking of acquitted, DeLorean was never convicted either. Those videos are burned in the collective though.

Totally OT but there's a DeLorean in town here in NJ; I see it often... just looks like it needs good polish but wasn't that the Delorean achillies heel? I mean really, who thought that one up... "Let's be different, let's not paint it, let's just lacquer it!"?

Is it even lacquered?  I thought it was just naked, brushed stainless steel.  The whole appeal was that it was stainless, and thus didn't need paint to prevent corrosion.

You can now buy a newly-built Delorean, made from all new parts:

That's stagering; an '81 with 4K for less than the price of a posh MINI. Dare you to ask them if they have any in Red... looks stunning though: http://www.time-traveler.org/delorean/Cleveland/km-clev18.jpg
